modernconnoisseurtt asked: thanks for the reply and sir I dribble looking at some of the watches on your blog totally blown! At present I'm willing to invest maximum $600US. I'm a sucker for square or rectangular face watches because they're just different, also drawn to classic watches for their elegance and simplicity, but I'm also drawn to modern wide band watches that you'd see with like fossil watches. I'm sorta all over I guess
Hi again!
So I’m finally getting around to answering some questions! :)
OK so let’s try and find something for you under $600.
What about going vintage?
I found a Stowa like this on eBay for $150, and they come up pretty regularly. Very classic and retro. Stowa are a great brand btw!

.
For something new you could try a Tissot Quadrato…you can pick this up new for $500 or less. Again excellent value, all Swiss Made and set at a very competitive price point.

.
.
If you want something from Fossil, and modern, the one brand of theirs I do kinda like is ‘Zodiac’. Swiss made, and you should be able to pick one up for south of $600 if you shop around.
Here is their ‘Adventure ZMX’ line:

Hopefully there is something there to catch your eye!

Thanks again for your question,

lavishlivez asked: Dude, you are the best! (btw that's the one I was looking at. Idk why I say PRS200). Sorry for the mass questions, but what about a Hamilton watch? Tissot vs Hamilton, which is worth it's money.
Hey Paul,
Hamilton are another very good watch manufacturer, and are undergoing a bit of a resurgence of late. They were previously known best for their Ventura line (worn by none other than Elvis Presley), and are an American company, though their watches are all manufactured in Beil, Switzerland.
I really quite like the Railroad Petite Seconde, but the price is over double that of the Tissot PRC200. I would say if you’re looking to spend north of $1000 then Hamilton is definitely worth considering…but for south of $500 the Tissot is hard to beat as an all rounder.

What do you think of the Tissot PRS200. I don’t know if I want the steel band or the leather. And which colors should I go for if i want to sport it everyday (suits/ casual).
Thanks Anish!

Hi again Paul!
I would say, get the PRC200 instead…looks awesome on a bracelet or a strap, and it straddles the sport-casual-smart line a bit better I feel.
I would buy it on the bracelet and then buy a spare strap and deployant buckle separately…that way you can swap them round when you want to dress it up a bit!

.
What do you think?

ilwe asked: Hey Anish, I'm a college student and I've been wanting a watch for a while now. I looked at watches like the IWC Portofino Automatic, Quantieme Perpetuel from Jaquet Droz, and the IWC Portuguese Chronograph, and I love them for their clean and simple look. If I had the money I would buy these watches instantly, but all I have to spend is $500. Is there a quality watch with the look of the watches listed above for that price range?
Hey ilwe,
Sorry for the late reply!
Of course the watches on you ‘want list’ are all beautiful, but unfortunately also very expensive in terms of day-to-day affordability!
Your budget is still pretty decent though, and $500 can go a long way.
I’ve previously touched on the merits of the Tissot Visodate (here), so I’ll look at an alternative now.
Stowa are a German made brand, and frankly for the money their quality is nothing short of staggering!
I believe they only sell directly, which helps them keep RRP’s down, but honestly for $500 you can pick up something like an Antea, which is actually gorgeous, and can be bought in a variety of colours and strap combos!!

.
This one isn’t an Antea, but I’m just putting it up because I like it anyway :)

.
.
In addition, they are owned by Jörg Schauer who makes some even nicer watches (though substantially more expensive) under his own brand name (here).
.
Hope that helps!
Anish :)
le-king-deactivated20120124 asked: Hey Anish, hope you're well. I'm looking for a black leather band watch to wear with business attire, but I'm on a budget. Not looking to spend over $1000. Got any recommendations?
Hello Mr King! :)
I’m great thanks! Just come back from a meeting and had a nice glass of wine with dinner, so I can’t complain too much.
With regards to the watch you’re looking for, I would probably recommend a Longines Master Collection…possibly the chronograph if you don’t mind going for a slightly older model.
I did a post on the Longines Master Collection and Legend Diver here.
Another great brand that offers very good value for money is Tissot, and I especially love the Visodate (either the regular or the 1957 Heritage 150th anniversary edition). And you can easily change the brown strap for your preferred black, so there are no worries there.

If you don’t mind a slightly smaller watch, say somewhere around the 34-36mm size then there is a lot you can buy in the vintage category such as this piece I just saw on eBay, this original first edition Junghans Max Bills watch here, or if you’re feeling a bit more daring then there’s this Junghans Luftwaffe Pilots watch here.
.
Hope that gives you a bit of help, but there are so many options at this price point that I may have only shown the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
Let me know if you’d like me to recommend some other models based on a particular style?
.
Thanks for the question, and of course for reading the blog!
.
Best regards,
Anish
ukegotswag asked: opinion on tissot and g-shocks?
Hey UGS,
At the pricepoint, Tissot is a good option. The watches are made by the Swatch Group which means they are part of the same family as Omega, Longines, Rado and Breguet amongst others. Very nice classic designs, and a lot of ‘bang for your buck’. Only drawback is that they don’t really do ‘contemporary’ designs, but that comes down to personal taste more than anything.
G-Shocks again have their own market, and though some models can be a bit overpriced, as a whole they are still a decent buy, mainly because with regards to a digital watch that’s seen as cool, there’s not really much competition from another brand.
I would probably opt for a Tissot out of the 2…and I particularly like the Couturier Automatic in Rose Gold:

Hope that helps!
