Legend Diver - Longines

A guide to watches under $500? I got you…
Have a read…some feedback would be great :)
Anonymous asked: Hello Sir, may I request your advice in choosing a women's timepiece for my wife. She is turning 30 & just found out that she is pregnant with our 1st child.. It is a very exciting time & I'd like to celebrate with something nice. Any guidance is greatly appreciated. Range is very wide: 500 -1200 USD.
Hello and congratulations Anon!
Having put some thought into it, I would probably recommend a Longines Prima Luna. They are very elegant and available in a couple of differing sizes so you’ve got the option of something small or slightly bigger for her should she prefer.
The starting list price is somewhere around $700, and it’s available with either a quartz or automatic movement.

Let me know your thoughts..?
Thanks,
Anish
corvettecid asked: I'm graduating soon and want a timepiece that shows I am successful and ambitious. I don't have a ton of money but want something decent that I can wear as my primary watch. I really like the Tag Carrera CV2014 BA0794 but am wondering if I should hold out for a few years and buy something like a Rolex Dayjust or Daytona. I really don't want to spend much more than $2000 so the Rolexs are double and triple my budget. Ask Men's watch snob suggests that anything priced under 5K is junk is this true
Hi corvettecid,
$2000 is a very healthy budget for a watch, and the TAG you are looking at is a great buy (though it does retail for significantly more than $2000, unless you are buying used?).
The CV2010 is also a good alternative if you want the watch to be a bit dressier without the red accents, though I suspect those are what drew you to that particular model in the first place!

Some other watches I could suggest would be models such as the Master Collection Chronograph from Longines, or the Tangente from NOMOS if you want something dressier - they are excellent value for money, and all their models use in-house movements!

See a Rolex will hold it’s value better than most brands other brands, there is no denying that. However as you don’t want to go too far over budget I would suggest that the only model you could look to get anywhere near $2k would be a stainless steel Datejust. Not a bad choice by any means, but when spending that sort of money wouldn’t it be better to buy something you really love!?!
.
For me, if I were looking to spend between $2k-$3k my wallet would drag me fairly aggressively to a MeisterSinger Singular. I love the 1 handed time display and minimal chronograph!

.
With regards to AskMen’s comments about watches under $5k being junk, I suspect it was said with a hint of tongue-in-cheek. There are many brands out there such as Jorg Schauer, Grand Seiko, Marice de Mauriac, Hamilton, Girard Perregaux, Zenith and even Jaeger LeCoultre that have great watches available under the $5k mark.
.
I hope that helps you somewhat, and please let me know if I can help further.
Thanks,
Anish
Longines Monopusher Chronograph. Classic.
Beautifully executed. Particularly the lugs (or lack of) and classic uncluttered dial. Being Longines expect it to be very good value for money to boot

Anonymous asked: Favorite sports watch under $1000 and $500?
A used Longines Legend Diver for under $1000

An iTime Phantom for under $500 ($230 actually!)

My watch collection (from left to right): Longines Hydroconquest, Omega Speedmaster (Schumacher), Omega Seamaster (2254), Concord Mariner automatic (white), Concord Mariner automatic (blue)..
Cc: Watchanish..
Cc: Received..
Great collection sir! I see you have a thing for chronographs (all bar one) and metal bracelets. That Schumacher Speedmaster is delightful as are the others, but that for me is the standout piece if I had to pick one.
*Bravo*
So what’s the next purchase on the hit list? My advice (as if you need it) would be a nice dress watch to compliment your already very good collection :)
Pick a fav!
For me…ooh it’s a tough call, but I’d go for the rose gold Cartier Calibre Multi Time Zone at the top right there.
TBH it’s a pretty well rounded group…I would change that Breitling over for their Transocean Chrono though ;)

bourneofosiris asked: Dearest Sir, I am an absolute lover of your blog, and you definitely have the best watch blog on all of Tumblr, though I am interested in a recommendation you have for somebody that loves the color of everose gold on a watch. The price matters not, but I'm sure you'll find me an affordable, great looking, and useful watch. Feel free to reply anytime, I am quite patient myself, or even not replying is not awful as well, I just wanted to acknowledge your wonderful work on this site.
Good evening good sir!
Thank you for your very kind words, and allow me to (finally!) help to answer your question :D
Without a ballpark budget (I know you said affordable, but Bill Gates’ affordability is a lot more than mine!), it’s difficult to ascertain the exact type of everose you would like…solid gold or plated?
Everose by the way is Rolex’s term for their mix of rose gold, which is basically gold, copper and platinum.
Personally, and it’s somewhat hard for me to say this because modern Rolex watches really are not my thing, but the everose Daytona is honestly a thing of beauty as much as I hate to admit it! My personal choice would be the either the rose gold or black dialled iteration…

Something a bit easier on the pocket? You can’t help but fall in love with the IWC Portuguese Chronograph in rose gold with a slate grey dial (ref: 3714-82) <3

.
.
Lower? How about a Longines Legend Diver in rose gold? I used to have this same model and I curse the day I let it go! You hardly ever see any of the rose gold version around, and it is a bargin considering it’s a solid 18k gold watch (I saw one for sale at under $3500)!

Cheaper still? I’ll show you a watch that I have, and picked up for less than $250 (btw I know how stupid that cyclops is, just ignore it and you’ll soon forget about it!)

Hope that helps, and I will leave you with my ultimate king of rose gold kings…Patek Philippe Nautilus ref 5980R ««<33333

Anonymous asked: Hi, Im a 20 year old and finally saved about a grand to drop on a watch. What would you recommend? I want something that I can wear with just jeans or shorts and a tshirt as well as when I go out at night. Is there any watch that can do this?
Buy a Longines Legend Diver, a NATO strap for $15, a ‘dressier’ black croc strap, wear it everywhere and never look back! :D

Do we prefer the date (practical - bottom) or non-date (truer to original - top) version?

Anonymous asked: hey watch anish, school's is starting up again and i'm looking for a new watch, something not too thick and under two thousand australian or american. I've broken my Tag Heuer Kirium in a skating accident. Also keeping in mind that this will also be a watch worn everywhere on most occasions (school, casual outings, etc.) and stainless steel!
Hey Anon,
I’ve kinda touched on it before here, here and here, but my personal favourite watch at that price point is pretty much hands down the Longines Master Collection Chronograph. It’s a really beautiful watch that looks great on both the metal bracelet and the leather strap options, and will fit most occasions with no hassle.

There are so many nice watches at this price though that you’ll never be stuck without a choice.
Let me know if you’d like me to help narrow down the search for you a bit more!
.
Thanks!

le-king-deactivated20120124 asked: Hey Anish, hope you're well. I'm looking for a black leather band watch to wear with business attire, but I'm on a budget. Not looking to spend over $1000. Got any recommendations?
Hello Mr King! :)
I’m great thanks! Just come back from a meeting and had a nice glass of wine with dinner, so I can’t complain too much.
With regards to the watch you’re looking for, I would probably recommend a Longines Master Collection…possibly the chronograph if you don’t mind going for a slightly older model.
I did a post on the Longines Master Collection and Legend Diver here.
Another great brand that offers very good value for money is Tissot, and I especially love the Visodate (either the regular or the 1957 Heritage 150th anniversary edition). And you can easily change the brown strap for your preferred black, so there are no worries there.

If you don’t mind a slightly smaller watch, say somewhere around the 34-36mm size then there is a lot you can buy in the vintage category such as this piece I just saw on eBay, this original first edition Junghans Max Bills watch here, or if you’re feeling a bit more daring then there’s this Junghans Luftwaffe Pilots watch here.
.
Hope that gives you a bit of help, but there are so many options at this price point that I may have only shown the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
Let me know if you’d like me to recommend some other models based on a particular style?
.
Thanks for the question, and of course for reading the blog!
.
Best regards,
Anish
